Description

Author: Fr. Martin J. Bourne, OSB

We are indebted to the Gospel of Luke for the three simple words, “Remember Lots’ Wife.” It was in the course of his instruction on the Day of the Son of Man that Jesus urged his listeners to do precisely that: “Remember Lot’s Wife,” adding at once: “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will save it.” There is simply no way around it, for as Jesus insists, “It is in dying to ourselves that we are born to eternal life.” The meditations in this book, written in the style of Lectio Divina, endeavor to illustrate our Savior’s admonition in a variety of ways. Beginning with familiar short passages from the Old Testament and working his way through the New, Abbot Martin J. Bourne (1914-2003) brings his considerable experience, talent and expertise to unveiling the hidden meaning behind the Word of God in such a way that the reader will find immediate application to his or her own life and, by putting the Word into practice, become more and more like Christ thus entering into the fullness of life that we all seek.

About the Author: Martin J. Bourne, O.S.B., professed vows as a member of St. Mary’s Benedictine Abbey in 1935, was ordained to the priesthood in 1940 and became a chaplain in the U.S. Navy where he served with the Marines in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam. Following the war, he taught Germen and music at St. Benedict’s while earning a doctorate in music from New York University. At various times he served as sub-prior, novice master, the fifth abbot of St. Mary’s (1966-71), and President of the American-Cassinese Congregation. He taught at Immaculate Conception Seminary, served as director of liturgy in the Diocese of Paterson, administrator of Holy Cross Abbey in Colorado, and he regularly taught speech and religion at the Delbarton School from 1965 until he retired in 1995.
