From the Middle Ages to Modern Times

Author: Jose de Vinck

In the writings and experiences of these gifted women of God— Mechtild of Magdeburg, Hadewyck of Antwerp, Angela of Foligno, Julian of Norwich, Josefa Menendez, Louisa Jaques, Concepción Cabrera de Armida (Conchita), and Gabrielle Bossis—we come into contact with the indomitable faith of the human psyche in the ultimate power of Love and the firm belief that, in the end, as St. Paul says, “all things work together for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His decree” (Rm 8:28).

Four of these women lived in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries; four of them come from the nineteenth and twentieth. Their countries of origin are Germany, Belgium, Italy, England, South Africa, Spain, Mexico and France. Their nationality, social standing, education and occupation are as diverse as are their personalities. What they share in common is the precious gift of their personal, existential contact with the Living God.

They have left us, as a heritage, these brief expressions of their experience. “If, after reading the present book, you feel uplifted by an increase of your love for God and neighbor; if you part from it with a feeling that, for some few moments, you have been raised to the highest reaches of life; if you hunger for more and are eager to ‘taste and see’ for yourself ‘how sweet the Lord is’ (Ps 3 3:9), then the Word of God has come alive in you. May He be forever praised!”

About the Author: Jose de Vinck is the author of fifteen titles including five volumes of translations of the works of St. Bonaventure from the Latin and several works in the fields of philosophy, theology and marriage preparation: The Virtue of Sex, The Challenge of Love (with Rev. John T. Catoir), The Yes Book—An Answer to Life, The Words of Jesus and many others. A Doctor of Laws from Louvain University and former Professor of Philosophy at Seton Hall University and elsewhere, Dr. de Vinck presently fills his days as publisher/owner of Alleluia Press.
