SEASONS OF THE SOUL

Author:Concepción Cabrera de Armida (Conchita)
Copyright: 2005

The classics of Roman Catholic spirituality have often described progress in the spiritual life as an arduous climb to the summit as in The Ascent of Mount Carmel by St. John of the Cross, or as the passage through various mansions until one reaches the abode of God in the inner chamber as in The Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Avila. Concepción Cabrera de Armida (Conchita) takes a more cyclical approach and sees the spiritual life as an ongoing maturation through the various seasons of the year which continuously repeat themselves over and over again until the soul has fulfilled its purpose here on earth. From the first Springtime of the soul until it has weathered its last Winter, the Holy Spirit is at work gradually transforming the soul into the image and likeness of Jesus, the Father’s highly beloved and only-begotten Son. A careful reading of these pages will give a very clear insight into the depth of this saintly author’s own growth in holiness. Truly another classic in the area of Roman Catholic spirituality!

About the Author: Concepción Cabrera de Armida (Conchita) [1862-1937], lived during a turbulent time in Mexican history. She was the mother of nine, the foundress of the Sisters of the Cross of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the inspiration behind the foundation of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. Conchita wrote extensively on the spiritual life, taking as her central themes love for the Cross of Jesus and the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Her life story is detailed in the book,Conchita: A Mother’s Spiritual Diary, edited by M.M. Philipon, O.P. (Alba House, 1978) and her love for the Eucharist is set forth in her own words in I Am (Alba House, 2001) and in Irresistibly Drawn to the Eucharist, edited by Fr. Juan Gutierrez Gonzalez, M.Sp.S. (Alba House, 2002). Her correspondence to members of her family is presented in A Mother’s Letters(Alba House, 2004). Her cause for beatification is presently under serious consideration at the Vatican.

I am having a very powerful experience reading your new edition of Conchita's Seasons of the Soul. This is a wonderfully successful translation. This little book deserves all the publicity that you can give it. As a framework for reflecting on the cycles of one's own spiritual journey, her insight on page 34, "clarifications that bind," is certainly apt. I look forward to what lies ahead in that journey, knowing that, with her insights in mind, I will be better prepared to understand what is happening "in season." --Gary T. Johnson
