This is a concise, classic compendium of the documents of the Catholic Church which define the Christian faith as understood by Catholics. It includes the creeds of the Church from the earliest times along with all the major extracts from all the important decrees and declarations of councils, popes, and Vatican congregations down through the ages touching on matters of faith and Christian living. This volume is fully updated through to 2000. All these documents have been organized in chronological order under themes, each with a helpful introduction and outline, so that developments in teaching the faith, and the concerns of theology and authority at various periods in the history of the Church become fully apparent. Indices and Tables enhance the value of this unique collection for professors and students of Church history and theology. An indispensable aid to every serious student of theology.

"This is the latest edition of a work whose origins go back to the 1938 edition of Neuner and Roos. This is in every respect what can be called post-conciliar. The introductions to the chapters have all been rewritten and revised in the light of recent scholarship and much new material had to be added to reflect so many theological developments since the Second Vatican Council. This collection begins with the chronologically arranged presentation of the professions of faith (creeds) of the Catholic Church followed by material arranged in 23 chapters. Each of these chapters deals with a broad topic under which the relevant documents are arranged again in chronological order. These chapter headings reflect the basic elements of our Catholic faith. There is a chronological table of documents, a biblical index, an analytical index, and comparisons, or a concordance, to the other great collection of Church documents by Denzinger-Schönmetzer. To have such a handy resource of doctrinal documents in a user-friendly format is a good thing. The inclusion of so much material published since the Second Vatican Council makes this a necessary replacement for all earlier editions. This classic compendium clearly doctrinally defines our faith for twenty-first century Catholics. It should be in all Catholic libraries." --Arnold Rzepecki inCatholic Library World, June 2002

"When many of us were in seminary, we found the English version of Enchiridion Symbolorum: The Teaching of the Catholic Church, a very valuable tool in research and later in teaching. The Christian Faith in the Doctrinal Documents of the Catholic Church is the modern version of this handy tool, updated and improved. It is a good reference book to have." --Fr. Don Piraroin The Priest, November 2001

"For this new edition introductions to the chapters have in some cases been thorougly reworked; aspects insufficiently stressed in the past such as the social dimension of the sacraments or the role of lay people, have been properly emphasized. Texts that had been overlooked in previous editions have been inserted without, however, changing the serial number of the documents. Translations have been improved and, where necessary, due corrections have been made. For this edition, the editor benefitted from the help of several colleagues who teach at the Gregorian University in Rome. He himself, as well as being in charge of three chapters, prepared the chronological table of documents, the biblical index, the analytical and onomastic index, and the concordance with Denzinger-Shoenmetzer's Enchiridion Symbolorum." --Gregorianum, Vol. 77

"This work of Neuner and Dupuis is the seventh scholarly revision of its first publication in German in 1938. This edition includes some characteristic texts of Vatican II and postconciliar documents, leaves out some texts which have lost their relevance since the last revision, reintroduces others, and offers new translations of still other documents." --Clare Boehmer, ASC in Review for Religious, September-October 2001

"When I was in the seminary back in the 1980's, The Christian Faith was the only book other than the Bible that we could bring into our Final Comprehensive Exams. The book offered the teaching of the Church as given by documents and decrees down through the century. It has been updated over the years as new information and new documents are presented. This 7th edition brings us up-to-date into the new millennium. The book quotes Pope John Paul II and the latest Church documents. This book needs to be on the bookshelves of all parishes and of those teaching the Catholic Faith. It is a quick resource that helps us locate the information needed. As such it is indeed an invaluable resource." --Matthew Roehrig, SSPin Pastoral Life, December 2001
