On October 17, 1908, a young man named Joseph Giaccardo entered the seminary of Alba in northern Italy. He was there while the seminary’s new spiritual director, Father James Alberione, was dreaming of founding a religious congregation dedicated to using the press and other means of mass communications to spread the gospel. In the years that followed, this dream became a reality. Joseph joined the new group, called the Society of St. Paul, became its first priest, and took the religious name Timothy. Thus began decades of steady toil and cares, under the guidance of the Society’s founder till his untimely death by leukemia on January 24, 1948.

On October 22, 1989, in the basilica of St. Peter, Pope John Paul II said to an assembled crowd: “With our apostolic authority we declare that the venerable Joseph Timothy Giaccardo from this moment on shall be called Blessed, and that every year his feast may be celebrated on October 22 to commemorate his birth into heaven.”

Here is the story of how Father Giaccardo came to be found worthy of such a great honor, the story of his years in a brand new congregation, his quiet and steadfast holiness, his dedication to winning official recognition for a new group of Pauline Sisters, the Pious Disciples of the Divine Master, and his service to the other branches of the burgeoning Pauline Family, the Daughters of St. Paul and the Pastoral Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd, along with his accomplishments, his struggles with poverty, fascism, the Second World War and his saintly death.

About the Author: Eugenio Fornasari, SSP, a priest of the Society of St. Paul, spent several years under the guidance of his mentor and teacher, Father Timothy Giaccardo. As a journalist and member of the Pauline editorial staff he has authored many publications and biographies. In the present one he traces a filial, authentic and devoted profile of the new “Blessed” as an exemplary priest, from his youth to his total dedication to the canonical recognition and spiritual growth of the Pauline Family to his holy death: a life of a truly “obedient prophet” for our times.
